A little light going a long way

Lighting technologies are changing on a daily basis.  Yesterday I was shown a solar power LED light that does not need to be plugged into any electricity.  It generates its own solar power to keep the fixture going for over 30,000 hours.

The New York Times ran an interesting article about some fun things happening in Singapore.  Check it out...

Undercover Hacker

The answer to last Friday's post was the infamous "All of the Above".  It seems like the obvious answer (because it was)...

I was trying to throw out a free-bee but no bites.. o well.

In other news... Alightingstore.com has just acquired a new Marketing Director.  So soon enough she may cut me off from my favorite place to rant (no not that... the blog).

If that happens I will go undercover (no that picture is not me but I will take on his identity) and secretly spread lighting news around the web in whatever form I can...(shhh)

Stay tuned.

Lighten Things Up

If every US household changed their 5 highest-use fixtures to energy efficient lighting:

A) We would save more than 800 billion kWh of energy and keep more than one trillion pounds of greenhouse gases out of our air.

B) National annual energy savings would be equivalent to the annual output of more than 20 power plants, or the equivalent in air pollution to removing more than 8 million cars from the road.

C) Americans would collectively save more than $6 billion every year in energy costs.

D) All of the above

Buy Energy Efficient Lighting at Alightingstore.com and find out.

Or just wait till monday and I'll give you the answer.  (shhh)

In honor of our biggest fan...

The aurora  borealis is perhaps the most famous lights in the history
of the world. Named after the roman goddess Aurora(whose name means
dawn) the lights are usually visible over the arctic or Antarctic
circles.

A common misconception however, is that the aurora lights are actually
polar lights. In truth however the northern lights are actually
visible over a spectrum with a temperature of 65 degrees to 72
degrees. Their reason for occurring is actually a reflection of light
off the ionized nitrogen in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Alightingstore.com also provides colored lighting. Checkout some of
our overhead fixtures to make your own aurora... or just light up your living room...

Just a Rant

Today I will simply blog about what is on my mind.

There are certain things that individuals do for all their life and by virtue of their time spent they believe that they are doing what they do in the most efficient way.  These folks are quickly encountered by some younger less experienced individual who wants to change the way they have done things for years.  This is naturally very frustrating to the experienced individual.

Unfortunately, there is nothing to do but cope.  The younger less experienced person is looking at things with fresh eyes.  They are not trying to insult you, they are simply saying: hey! lets try it this way it might work better!

Deal with it.

At your own risk

High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps produce a dark pink glow when first struck, and a pinkish orange light when warmed. Some bulbs also briefly produce a pure to bluish white light in between. This is probably from the mercury glowing before the sodium is completely warmed.

They are used in areas where good color rendering is important, or desired.  HPS Lamps are favoured by indoor gardeners for general growing because of the wide colour-temperature spectrum produced and the relatively efficient cost of running the lights.

Memo: AlightingStore.com is not concerned with the use of the lamps and fixtures that we sell.

Did you know?

Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are miniature versions of full-sized fluorescent bulbs and are 4 times more
efficient and last up to 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb. While CFLs supply an equal amount of light, in
comparison to their incandescent counterparts, they use up to 80% less energy. The initial cost of a CFL is more
expensive yet the total expense outcome is much less. CFLs may be used in most places where an incandescent
bulb is used.

More power. Less Energy.  This has got the green people going crazy!  (See for yourself)

Induction 101

What is an induction lamp?

It’s a fluorescent type bulb without the metal electrical contacts used to conduct electricity from the fixture to the light-emitting gas inside the bulb. The lamps are capable of saving a generous 40% over their fluorescent counterparts, and some models boast a life expectancy of up to 100,000 hours.

For those who like numbers...

4167 days without changing the lamp
595 weeks without changing the lamp
11 years without changing the lamp

Buy one today and don't stress about your lighting until 2022!

Not necessarily good for AlightingStore between now and 2022, but you could help make 2010 a good year...

The law and lighting

"How Many Lawyers Does it Take to Change a LightBulb?

Whereas the party of the first part, also known as "Lawyer", and the party of the second part, also known as "Light Bulb", do hereby and forthwith agree to a transaction wherein the party of the second part (Light Bulb) shall be removed from the current position as a result of failure to perform previously agreed upon duties, i.e., the lighting, elucidation, and otherwise illumination of the area ranging from the front (north) door, through the entryway, terminating at an area just inside the primary living area, demarcated by the beginning of the carpet, any spillover illumination being at the option of the party of the second part (Light Bulb) and not required by the aforementioned agreement between the parties. "

Can you think of anything more boring than lighting?

I can.

Lawyers.

Business Advice

The creator of the first working light bulb was Joseph Wilson Swan. Swan's house was the first place in the world to be lit by a light bulb (and hydroelectric power). He patented the light bulb in England.
Thomas Alva Edison improved Swan's light bulb by using a better incandescent material and a higher vacuum and patented it in the US.

Rather than fighting for the ownership of the patent, Swan and Edison formed the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company.  What this should tell you is simple:

When forming a business regarding a new technology, make sure that you get your name listed first (i.e. Edison & Swan Electric Light Company)... Who the heck is Swan? Who Cares?

A little current events for a Saturday

Israel’s cabinet has approved recommendations for preventing the further erosion of coastline cliffs.

The Israel National Roads Company  is preparing to publish tenders for the supply, installation and maintenance of wind turbines to generate electricity for highway lighting.

According to the Globes business daily, the CFO of Israel National Roads Co., Shay Yiftach, explained at a conference this week that small wind turbines could be installed on lighting poles on the coastal highway running along Israel’s Mediterranean coastline to exploit the sea winds.

The CEO of this government corporation, Alex Viznitzer, added: “We are initiating steps to integrate systems for producing renewable energy into the infrastructure of highways. Thousands of acres of available land at interchanges can be exploited for placing photovoltaic solar arrays. Many thousands of street lights can use wind turbines.”

On a different note however....

Q: How many congregants does it take to change a light bulb in a synagogue?
A: CHANGE? You want we should CHANGE the light bulb? My grandmother donated that light bulb!!!

No laughing matter

Many people have turned lighting into a joking matter.  This is a serious mistake.  One of the most notorious lighting misteps is the classic "lightbulb joke".

So you might ask: What is a lightbulb joke?

According to Wikipedia:

"A lightbulb joke is a joke that asks how many people of a certain group are needed to change, replace, or screw in a light bulb. Generally, the punch line answer highlights a stereotype of the target group. There are numerous versions of the lightbulb joke satirizing a wide range of cultures, beliefs and occupations"

You can plainly see that a joke about lighting can be very hurtful.

Dangers of Lighting

"All fueled lanterns are somewhat hazardous due to the danger of handling flammable and toxic fuel, danger of fire or burns from the high temperatures involved, and potential dangers from carbon monoxide poisoning if used in an enclosed environment."

If you don't think that you can handle a fueled lantern, you are not on your own.  Most people would likely prefer a light that they can simply turn on and off.  If thats you, then have no fear!  Alightingstore.com is here!!!

Religious take on lighting...

In the beginning there was nothing. God said, 'Let there be light!' And there was light. There was still nothing, but you could see it a whole lot better.

Whale Oil (No Longer Necessary)

"In 1849, Dr. Abraham Gesner, a Canadian geologist, devised a method where kerosene could be distilled from petroleum. Earlier coal-gas methods had been used for lighting since the 1820s, but they were expensive. Gesner's kerosene was cheap, easy to produce, could be burned in existing lamps, and did not produce an offensive odor as did most whale oil. " -The Internet
